True Catalan culture
Traditions in Penedès
Penedès, a Catalonian region famous for its wine, is known for its Cava production and rich winemaking traditions. Each September, the grape harvest is celebrated with festivals featuring grape stomping, wine tastings, and parades. The region also hosts the Festa Major in Vilafranca del Penedès, honoring Saint Felix with parades, music, and human towers (castells). These human towers are a UNESCO-recognized tradition where groups build large, intricate human pyramids. Traditional parades feature giant figures (gegants) representing historical or mythical characters. Fireworks and correfocs (fire-runs) are also central, adding dramatic flair to the festivities.
DO Penedès
DO Penedès, or Denominació d’Origen Penedès, is a Spanish wine appellation that designates the Penedès region as a protected area for high-quality wine production. The “DO” status ensures wines are made following strict standards to preserve the region’s unique grape-growing heritage and traditions.
The logo’s inclusion of a woman symbolizes the goddess Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, fertility, and harvest. The bust of Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, discovered at the Font de la Canya site in Avinyonet del Penedès, is now the new symbol of the DO Penedès. This emphasizes the region’s connection to agriculture and wine production.
The “2700 years” mark reflects Penedès’ long history in wine production, dating back to when the Phoenicians introduced winemaking to the area. This legacy highlights Penedès as one of the oldest wine regions in Europe, celebrated for its distinct terroir and winemaking heritage.
